Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is found in south western Uganda and is one of nature’s last unspoiled reserves. It has a wide diversity of wild animals and bird species and is home to a number of endangered wildlife species. This combination of the two factors makes a truly unique nature reserve.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over half of the World’s population of Mountain Gorillas, which is on the WWF list of endangered species. It is also the habitat a very rare group of bird species that are mainly found in the Western Rift Valley called the Albertine rift Endemics. The National Park is also home to a wide variety of monkey species, mountain Elephants and a cross section of butterflies, 10 of which are found only in Uganda.

Bwindi is home to the Mountain Gorilla, an endangered species. There are 4 ‘habituated’ gorilla groups available for daily tourists with more being habituated. Habituation is where the gorillas are gradually introduced to human beings for limited periods of time. Each group usually has one Silverback gorilla, which is the dominant male and leader of the group. The habituated groups have between 10 and 20 members.

Bwindi is believed to be among the parks with one of the largest number of bird species in all of East Africa. Among these species are 23 of the 24 Albertine Endemics which are only found in Uganda, the Democratic Republc of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda. The Albertine Endemics include three of the most endangered species; the Congo Bay Owl, the African Green Broadbill and the Yellow-Crested Helmet-Shrike. Other Albertine Endemic species that are found in Bwindi are the Red Throated Alethe, the Archer’s Robin Chat, the Kivu Ground Thrush and the Strange Weaver. Other bird species found in Bwindi include the Fraser’s Eagle owl, the Western Bronze-naped Pigeon, the Willcock’s Honey guide, the Chapin’s Flycatcher and the rare black bee-eater.

There are also a number of monkey species in the Bwindi Impenetrable N.P like the Velvet monkey, chimpanzee, the Guereza Colobus, the Blue/Gentle monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey and red tailed monkey are frequently seen.

The National Park is also rich in scenery with vast expanses of unbroken, virgin forest and a number of breathtaking waterfalls. This coupled with the large range of fauna, makes for scenic and refreshing walks along the magical Munyaga River and the fascinating waterfall trails.

Bwindi has two locations: Buhoma at the park Headquarters which is more developed and Ruhija which is an upcoming tourist destination. The National Park which is situated in South Western Uganda is approximately 530 km from Kampala .It is accessible only by road through Kabale-Kisoro road through Kanungu to Buhoma Park Headquarters. It can also be accessed through Rukungiri to Kanungu to Buhoma Park Headquarters.

Other animal species found in Bwindi Impenetrable NP include the Boehm’s squirrel, the Rwenzori Sun squirrel, the Rwenzori red duiker and the shy mountain elephants. The park is home to over 200 species of butterflies, of which 10 are only found in Uganda. A complete list of animals can be found on the species page.

There are several options for accommodation while in Bwindi. At the Buhoma site the accommodation ranges from luxury accommodation to Campsite accommodation.The Buhoma Luxury Camp, Montana Camp and the African Pearl Homestead are luxury accommodation make up the luxury accommodation.

The Buhoma Community Campsite offers bandas and cottages which are an inexpensive alternative to the luxury Lodgings. Campsite facilities are offered by the Buhoma Community Campsite, the Gorilla Forest Campsite, the Lake Kitandara Campsite and the Volcanoes Bwindi Camp.
